Gender differences in STEM performance and career selection

The acronym STEM refers to the academic and career categories of science, technology, engineering, and math. Traditionally these areas are viewed a ‘male’ fields. A 2007 survey showed that 74% of those in the computer sciences and 89% of those in engineering were male.
Yet, a recent study (by the National Association of Educational Progress) indicated that the difference in performance through high school between males and females is less than 1% in math and less than 3% in science.
A discussion of the reasons behind these differences can be interesting and enlightening, but can only lead to effective change when actions are taken. Action begins with awareness. According to a 2003 U.S. labor market survey, 70% of jobs in the foreseeable future will be in STEM areas.
